Chapter Sixteen

Pastor Webster and his wife were true to their words, allowing her to get the rest and nourishment she needed. Hannah felt a sense of well-being and hope.

“Good morning, Nelly. Right on time. Come on in. I just made coffee.”

“That sounds good. You know, I never drank coffee until I started working at the school.” Nelly laughed. “I remember when I drank some in front of your mama. I thought her jaw was gonna hit the floor.”

“That’s funny.” Hannah grinned as she poured two cups of coffee. “Come on and sit with me, then I’ll help you collect the eggs.”

Nelly looked at her wristwatch. “Okay. I have time. Since we’ve been giving your eggs away at the church, there’s been a line waiting for me.”

“I’m glad you can use them like that.” Hannah grinned and shook her head. “They were getting away from me. I almost ran out of refrigerator space.”

“How are volunteers working out? Do they come when they should?”

“Yes. It’s a big help. For all the help and meals, I’m grateful.”

“Well, I gotta get going.” There was a knock on the door.” Why don’t you get that? I’ll gather the eggs and get on my way.”

“Okay. Thanks, Nelly.”

Hannah opened the front door and saw Bobby Gaines standing there. “Good morning, Mr. Gaines. Are you my helper for the day?”

“I sure am. How’s your daddy doin’?”

“Still early days, Mr. Gaines. He’s undergoing intensive chemo. Mama says it is hard on him.”

“I imagine it would be. Your daddy wasn’t one to admit he needed help or that he was feeling bad.”

“Yeah, he’s stubborn. That’s for sure.”

“Well, I’ll get started.”

“Okay. I’ll get my gloves and be right out in a few minutes.” For the next three hours, Hannah worked with Charlie’s father. Never once did she ask about his daughter.

“I’ll be back at the same time next week, Hannah.”

“Thank you, Mr. Gaines, I appreciate all your help.” She gestured toward the cotton field. “Six hundred forty acres is a lot of work.”

“That it is. I can’t believe you worked this all by yourself. Take care, Hannah. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call.”

“Will do.” She watched the man walk to his truck and waved just before her phone rang. She pressed the speaker button. “Hey, Mick, do you want to come for supper tonight? I have a refrigerator full of food.”

“Maybe, but right now I need you here. Ted and the guy from Austin are coming at three this afternoon. Can you come?”

Hannah looked around and saw about three jobs she needed to take care of immediately. “I can be there as long as I get things done here first.” She shrugged. “I’ll be there. You can count on me.”

“Perfect. Guess what?”

“What?” Hannah was itching to get her work done so she’d be there on time.

“I don’t know how we missed it, Hannah, but in a drawer of a small desk was a journal. Apparently, Grandpa had inventoried everything in the garage along with prices.”

“Wow! That will give you a good frame of reference when the antique guy makes an offer.
